Today I wanted to try something in an architectural vein as a change of emphasis, so I made a fairly quick pen sketch of a window, very loosely inspired by the windows of King’s School in Canterbury:
The wiggly pen hatching is a new thing for me and it makes a good change from the more controlled shading I’ve used; it’s a looser technique, which is more fun, plus it seems to lend the drawing a touch more character. Something to deploy more regularly with this type of image, I think.

beautiful – once again very print like. Liz, I’m seeing a side of your work here on this page that I’ve not noticed before – one that would’ve suited printmaking very well! I love the wobbly lines. Reminds me of a technique called silverpoint, you should maybe try that out – requires certain tools but it’d be really interesting to see where it work take your work stylistically!
Thank you Alex! I have to agree, it’s odd but now that I’m drawing more for myself I’m in a totally different mindset to the one I was in at university – less rigid and more carefree/experimental.
I think I remember you mentioning silverpoint a while back; I’ll check that out. Out of curiosity how does that compare to aquatint? I always thought your pieces in that style were beautiful.
